Oral Cancer Screening
Did you know that the mortality rate for oral cancer is higher than that of cervical cancer, Hodgkin’s disease, brain, liver, kidney, or ovarian cancer? Each year, more than 30,000 Americans receive an oral cancer diagnosis. Using a new tool called VELscope, Dr. Bolding can quickly and painlessly screen for the disease.
VELscope is a high-intensity light that allows Dr. Bolding to identify oral cancer before it is visible to the naked eye. Healthy tissue shines under the VELscope light. Abnormal tissue appears as dark shadows. Studies have shown that early detection is key in battling oral cancer. By removing the cancer in the earliest stage and before it spreads, the survival rate increases to 80 percent.
